Even before it became a hip thing in our kitchen, they were being used by our forebears in baking their breads. The baking stone is a flat stone that is used in baking. Food is put on the stone inside the oven. Today, the baking stone is generally associated with baking pizza even if there are other applications for its use in baking. Only those cooking professionally or are passionate about cooking will have a baking stone in their kitchen.

Baking stones are made of a variety of materials. Clay stones are popular but marble is also commonly used. Granite is the ultimate in baking stone material. It is tough and can hold a lot of heat. Baking stones are placed in a cold oven and allowed to warm with the oven. It should cool with the oven after baking.
