Serving food in the right serving ware adds a lot to the presentation. There was a time when having plates and saucers will be enough for a family to dine in. Why, you could even entertain a few friends with just the ordinary plates, cups, saucers and drinking glasses. You can serve any kind of food and it will sit well in a plate or saucer or cup. That just isn’t so anymore.

Of course, you will still do that if you were in an outing. In a picnic even plastic plates and cutlery will do. But at home you would want to make the fanciest presentation possible. You will do it for your family or for guests. You will want to serve your pasta in a pasta serving bowl. These are individual slightly deep bowls that will accommodate a serving of pasta. They are often made of ceramic, glass or lacquered clay pottery. A salad will be best served in wooden bowls for a rustic touch. .

People from different eras have different tastes and preferences. For instance, there is a difference to what people use on their dining tables back in the old days than today. In the 1920s up to the mid 1940s, life tended to be more formal. So dinner services had more pieces with specialized uses.

Back then, cream soup bowls look like a wide shallow cup with two handles instead of the bowls we use at present. Since soup can be messy, the handles made it easier to hold the bowls. Soup bowls are usually placed on top of a 7 inch plate to provide a place to put the spoon after use.

In parties and large group gatherings, you have to be equipped with the right kind and size of serving ware. A large serving bowl is suggested for salads, rice, and main entrees. Pastas can be served in large pasta bowls. Finger foods can be presented in trays with dividers.

One must be creative when thinking of ways to present the food so that the guests will find everything on the table appealing. Having the food presented in large portions helps avoid going back and forth from the kitchen to the table for a refill.
