How to Clean Rusty Cast-iron Cookware

April 9th, 2010

Of course you want your cookware to be able to be of service for a long time. Cast iron cookware is probably the most durable cookware available. Proof of this is when you find them hidden in infrequently visited cabinets, in storage rooms and basements. They may be rusty but they are still whole, with neither chips nor cracks. If you have the patience, you can give it a good scrubbing and seasoning and you will have a totally serviceable piece of cookware.

When you find one of these rusty treasures, hold the urge to throw it away. Get a steel scouring pad and get to work. Once you have scrubbed off all the rust, wash it with regular water until it runs clear. Dry it in the oven for about 20 minutes. After cooling, it will be ready to be seasoned.
