paring knife

May 20th, 2009

There are other kinds of knives that are important in a well equipped kitchen. The paring knife is one of them. A paring knife is a small knife with a plain edge blade that is ideal for peeling and other small or intricate work (such as de-veining a shrimp, removing the seeds from a jalapeño, or cutting small garnishes). It is designed to be an all-purpose knife, similar to a chef’s knife, except smaller. Paring knives are usually between 6 and 10 cm (2½ and 4 inches) long.

A paring knife, although extremely useful in the kitchen isn’t just a utility knife. It is useful in cutting decorative garnishes such as a rose carved out of a radish or a food cup out of tomatoes or cucumber. They are useful in making designs in vegetables such as carrots or pumpkins. Be sure to have several of this very practical tool. You will have difficulty preparing a fruit or vegetable salad without one.

A couple just starting their married life needs to budget their finances well. When it comes to buying things for your new home, take stock of what you already have before listing down the things you still need. Go over the wedding gifts and do an inventory of what you own. Next, decide which items on your list should be prioritized when shopping.

Save money by learning to canvass prices between stores. Hunt for good bargains such as discount kitchenware, linen, bedding, toiletries and more. Restrain from spending too much in one go. Whatever you can’t afford at the moment, save up for it first then purchase them later in the coming months.

Kershaw knives

May 18th, 2009

When my daughters started to live on their own, they started to buy their own things. They were determined to get the best of whatever they needed. Their list was not long. They wanted only basic things. For one, they were not into collecting things the way mothers do. For another, they had limited storage.

In the kitchen they just needed two knives, a chef’s knife and a paring knife. Because they wanted the best, they got Kershaw knives. Kershaw Knives is a company that designs and manufactures a range of knives including kitchen knives. It belongs in the Japanese KAI Group, an award winning company recognized for their high quality products.

glass food storage containers

Kitchen storage comes in different forms. Tin cans, glass food storage containers and pottery are just a few of them. Ceramic pieces come in different forms and the glazing makes it useful not only as a container but as a home décor. When used for storing food ingredients, these containers should have tight lids so that insects cannot get into the food. Inspect them regularly to make sure that the contents are not infested.

I know of somebody who collects antique tin cans of different shapes and sizes. The attractive designs will justify their place as decorative items. But they are more than that. It serves as containers for needles and thread, old watches that she refuses to throw away and hair pieces for her daughter’s long hair. It is an example of one thing serving another purpose.
