cookware

July 21st, 2009

Growing up, I always loved my mom’s cooking. I would spend countless hours just watching her cook. When I was into my teens, I would cook with her. She would show me how to use the different cookware she had. She would explain to me patiently what each pan was for and how to take care of them so they would last long. From her I learned the joys of cooking.

Now that I have my family of my own, I cooked lovingly for my family. I invested in my cookware, I wanted my cookware to bring out the best flavors out of my food. When I first got married my cookware set was not ideal. The Teflon from my pans quickly peeled off. After a year some of the handles of my pots and pans were getting loose. Slowly, I began to build my cookware set. I started with one expensive premium stainless steel pan that would not dent when you drop it. Now my collection is top notch and will, more likely, last a lifetime. Hopefully my kids would inherit my cookware as well as my love for cooking.

glass pitchers

Entertaining a small group of friends for brunch or dinner can be one of the most satisfying things to do. It beats meeting up with them in a restaurant and ordering from boring menus. At home, your friends can be comfortable; conversations are generally more relaxed, and you can all eat without being bothered by pesky waiters in loud surroundings. It is a gratifying feeling to be able to let them try some of your new recipes including a refreshing new concoction that they enthusiastically pour out of glass pitchers. You are elated when they compliment you with how delicious the food tastes and how each dish totally complement each other.

It is in our nature to put too much food on the table. We never learn from catering experts who tell us that a few good dishes that are delicious, well balanced and are a good accompaniment for each other will be more appreciated than having a hodgepodge of dishes that leaves the guests wondering where to begin. Experts would usually plan a menu that will include a couple of pork and beef dishes, a chicken and seafood dish and some vegetables. Individual tastes will be covered by this combination. Cap it with a truly decadent dessert. Nobody will be complaining.

pottery mixing bowls

July 10th, 2009

I have a friend who is an artist and she has done all sorts of crafts. She was an art director then a photographer and now a potter. She started in pottery by investing on some pottery mixing bowls and began making bowls and plates. She spends her free time making pottery and she also teaches the art to children. Nowadays, she is preparing for her exhibit.

I have always envied my friend. Being an artist, she is able to adjust to whatever craft she decides to do easily. She started as an art director and is now a full time potter. Her collection of pottery mixing bowls is very impressive. She transformed her home into a pottery studio.

cast iron cookware

July 10th, 2009

When I got married, I decided to follow my passion in cooking. I took some classes to hone my skills as a chef. Prior to taking lessons I was already a good cook. After my cooking lessons, I realized my cookware was not ideal and lacking. I decide to “invest” in some cooking items. The first “investment” I did was a cast iron cookware set. Since one thing I hate about cooking is cooking in a dented pan. This won’t happen when it’s made of cast iron.

A cast iron cookware set will last you a lifetime. It’s so strong and durable you can drop it on the floor and nothing will happen to it. I’m not so sure about your floor though. A cast iron cookware is so hard and tough it might crack your tiles if you indeed try dropping it on the floor.

pressure canner

July 6th, 2009

Your garden rewarded you with a bumper crop and you want to reserve them for future use. Putting them in the refrigerator will assure you of its usability for maybe a maximum of a week. Pressure canning is a safe and economical method of preserving low acid foods which include most vegetables. It is used by home gardeners and big scale canning industries. This project will require the use of a pressure canner.

A pressure canner is made out of stainless steel or aluminum. It looks like a regular pressure cooker except that it has a pressure dial on the lid. It works by increasing the pressure within the tank to 11 psi. By raising the pressure, the temperature at which water boils goes from 212 degrees F to 240 degrees F at sea level. With the pressure canner, guess work is eliminated in coming out with perfectly preserved foods. Seeing your rows of pressure canned veggies on the shelf will be a personal satisfaction.

glass food storage containers

July 6th, 2009

I got married last year. Since I loved to cook, my wife and I filled up our bridal registry with kitchenware and knives. When we opened the gifts after the honeymoon, we noticed we got lots of glass food storage containers that were not on the list. We also got lots of picture frames. We decided to keep the essentials and swap the rest with the stuff we liked.

Glass food storage containers are good because it doesn’t absorb the taste or flavor of the food you keep in it unlike plastics containers. However, plastic containers are cheaper than glass, less expensive and you don’t have to be too careful when you are around them. Glass containers can break easily. Also, they can be very heavy especially when you put food inside. For me, the combination of both glass and plastics are ideal. I use glass for the food items I want to store for long periods of time like rice, pasta and sugar and plastics for everything else.

under cabinet toaster ovens

July 2nd, 2009

Two summers ago, I visited my Uncle and Aunt in Virginia. They had already retired from their jobs and had moved to a smaller house in the suburbs. Their children were all grown up with families of their own. Uncle Luis and Aunt Lydia welcomed us into their new home with open arms. We ate our meals in their cozy and modern kitchen. Their kitchen was equipped and designed with convenience in mind. They had under cabinet toaster ovens and electronic stoves which produced heat instead of fire. It was exactly the kind of kitchen I wanted.

When I was time to leave, I thanked Uncle Luis and Aunt Lydia for their hospitality. As soon as I came home, I told my sister all about their kitchen. Since she loved to cook and bake, we both decided that we would save money to renovate and modernize our kitchen. After a few months we started looking at under cabinet toaster ovens and electronic stoves. We set a goal that in a year, we would have our dream kitchen filled with modern appliances and gadgets.
