microwave cookware

February 17th, 2010

It was my husband’s birthday one day last week and guess what? He got a set of microwave cookware as a gift. I had to call and personally thank the giver because it was I who will be using it. The microwave has always been an ally in my cooking but I have never tried cooking with it. It was more the assistant that can thaw frozen meat, reheat food or boil a cup of water for coffee.

Well, the set came with a collection of recipes. I think I will give it a try one of these days. Did you know that you can prepare a bean and salsa dip, soups and salads, bake chocolate-banana nut bread in your microwave? With hamburger stroganoff and Caribbean chicken medley you have a complete meal. What convenience.

Cookie cutters are cool. They make eating cookies so much more enjoyable. Even plain old sugar cookies can taste better if it the cookies come in different designs. I, myself, remember eating animal shaped cookies when I was young. I would pretend that I was a T-rex or some man eating monster.

Cast iron waffle iron

February 9th, 2010

Nothing beats mom’s freshly cooked goodies! It is therefore important that you make use of cookware that will yield to evenly-cooked food that your kids will love like hotcakes and waffles. Cast iron waffle iron can be mom’s great partner in the kitchen. It typically consists of two hinged walls that interestingly molds and gives the waffle a honeycombed pattern. This is heated by placing it on a burner.

Cast iron waffle iron usually has insulated handle that has adequate length to lessen heat exposure. Most brands are designed to fit any stove or fireplace. It retains the quality of the waffle because of its capacity to retain heat. However, you have to make sure that the unit you will buy is properly seasoned to prevent rusting.

Pyrex ovenware

February 4th, 2010

We grew up with Pyrex. It is a brand name for glassware introduced in the early 1900s. Then, it was made from thermal shock resistant borosilicate glass. This is a type of glass known for having very low coefficients of thermal expansion making them resistant to thermal shock compared to other common glass. This kind of glass is still being used even if tempered soda lime glass is already also being used.

We were used to seeing the thick transparent Pyrex ovenware that came in sets of three lying around in our mother’s kitchens. They came into action when it was time to pour the batter for baking or when a casserole dish was put together. Pyrex may be known for their glass bake ware but they also carry ceramic, microwavable, stainless and non-stick cookware. They are all of superior durability, made with the needs of consumers in mind.

coffee grinders

February 3rd, 2010

The aroma of coffee is so amazing that it lifts your spirits up. So, drinking it freshly brewed in the morning is a beautiful way to start your day. Aside from keeping your coffee fresh, coffee grinders are also known to be cost effective. Compare to off-the-shelves coffee, the one that you grind yourself has stronger aroma and flavor. The longer it stays in bean form, the longer it locks the freshness inside.

Coffee grinders are available in two basic types: manual and electric. If you’re using a drip coffee maker, you can use blade grinders as this coffee machine does not require very fine consistency. These grinders are relatively cheaper. However, if you want to prepare espresso, you would have to use burr grinders. These are typically larger, heavier and more expensive but produce very fine and uniform consistency.
