A sharp table knife that is used for cutting steak is called a steak knife. Often, these knives feature serrated blades with wooden handles. Usually they are the only sharp knife found at the modern dinner table. Steak knives sometimes come in different sizes and prices. They differ in quality and durability.

After World War II, specialized steak knives emerged in America. Before World War I, all table knives were sharp but required frequent sharpening and polishing. With the decline household servants, this upkeep became less practical. Stainless steel became popular following WWI, which did not require polishing, but did require sharpening due to manufacturing limits. After WWII, serrated stainless steel steak knives were introduced which required neither polishing nor frequent sharpening, and proved to be an instant hit.

Deep Fried Turkey Anyone?

May 24th, 2010

Last week I had my first taste of deep fried turkey. It was heavenly. When I first heard about it from my friend I had to raise my eyebrow and asked, “deep fried turkey?” I thought it will be oily and greasy. I was pleasantly surprised it tasted better than cooking turkey the traditional way. Now I’m a convert. I’m seriously thinking of getting a stainless steel turkey fryer soon.

You will need special equipment to deep fry a turkey. Cooking a bird that big is no joke. Ideally you should fry it outdoors. You don’t want to fry something that big inside your kitchen. You will need lots of cooking oil to deep fry the bird. That much hot oil inside the house is not safe. That’s why you will need a stainless steel turkey fryer.

Dehydration is an alternative to the labor intensive way of food preservation which is canning. Food dehydration is a way of preserving food by removing moisture. Not only does it make food taste better, it is also a healthier option as it concentrates nutrients.

Food dehydrators work very well with fruits, vegetables and meats. Fruits can provide a healthy energy boosting snack which you can carry around anywhere. Particularly tasty in their dehydrated state are apples, bananas, and various berries. Dehydrating vegetables can be a little tricky. Meats will need some pre-cooking to kill all bacteria present before putting in the dehydrator.

When you’re in the kitchen, it is always best to have the right kind of cookware. Getting the right cookware depends on what you need, your style of cooking, and your budget. Buying a complete cookware set can be beneficial as it is cheaper in the long run, but you might not be able to use some of the pieces. Sometimes it is better to buy per piece, and then expand your cookware when the time is right.

Usually, you can start off with sauté pans, sauce pans and stainless steel stock pots. A 12-inch sauté pan can be perfect for cooking steaks, chicken, fish and vegetables. A 3-quart sauce pan is good for making sauces, steaming vegetables and cooking small amounts of pasta. The stainless steel stock pot, which is usually heavy-bottomed, is great for soups, stews, large amounts of pasta, or larger pieces of food like turkeys and lobsters.

How a Coffee Maker Works

May 14th, 2010

My lifestyle demands that I be pumped up and full of energy. As a teacher, I am bombarded with calls, meetings, and students begging for their lives the minute I step into the faculty room. In my down time, I do a couple of freelance writing gigs that involves a bit of research. At night, my bandmates and I do gigs here and there. The cycle repeats the next day, and the only reason I can keep up is because of those coffee makers that make life-giving coffee every morning.

Coffee makers are cooking appliances that removes the hassle of boiling water to make brewed coffee. Crushed coffee beans are placed in a filter inside a funnel, which is set over a glass or ceramic pot. Cold water is then poured into a separate chamber. The machine heats up the water to boiling point, which is then directed into the filter. Coffee makers have evolved through the years, but it still makes the same freshly brewed coffee that perks us up in the morning.
