Great Breakfast
A waffle is a batter- or dough-based cake cooked in a waffle iron patterned to give a distinctive and characteristic shape. There are many variations based on the type and shape of the waffle maker and the recipe used. Waffles are eaten all over the world, particularly in Belgium and the United States. Common toppings are strawberries, chocolate, sugar, honey, syrups, ice cream, and much more. Other waffle-shaped foods exist, and are sometimes called waffles just because of their shape, although most are actually potato products.
A waffle iron is a waffle maker consisting of two hot plates usually joined with a hinge. Depending on the plates used in a waffle iron, the waffles may be square, round, or triangular in shape. Early versions of the waffle iron can be traced all the way back to the Middle Ages. The traditional square pattern of a modern waffle was only one of several designs available during the medieval times. Waffle irons featuring a family crest were also popular, along with thinner plates which provided a popular snack similar to the waffle cones of today.
