Stoneware

January 4th, 2010

Pottery making is one old industry that is still thriving today. This is due to the ever increasing demand for flower pots and vases from the ornamental plant, cut flower and home décor sectors. Pottery is made of clay that is permanently hardened by firing in a kiln. The firing temperature gives pottery its finished appearance and strength.

There are three major pottery types:

~Earthenware is a pottery clay mixture that is fired at a lower temperature but cracks and chips more easily than the other types
~Stoneware pottery is made of a heavier clay mixture that gives it greater strength
~Porcelain is the purest and most delicate type of pottery formed from a fine white clay that is mixed with controlled amounts of feldspar and flint and then fired at a low temperature.
