The spring located inside the base calculates the weight of the item placed on the flat shelf. A mechanical or spring scale does not accurately calculate the weight of small objects or quantities of food. A digital kitchen scale uses an electrical cell that is hypersensitive to the slightest resistance making its accuracy superior to other types of scales.
