Wine Stopper Options
If you observe a bottle of wine you will often find that it has a cork stopper. The elasticity of cork combined with its near-impermeabillity makes it a suitable bottle stopper for wine bottles. This is because of the cellular structure of the cork. It can be easily compressed upon insertion and it will expand to form a tight seal. It will adjust to the diameter of the neck which tends to be inconsistent.
While the cork is still the stopper of choice in wine bottles, alternative wine closures have slowly crept into wine packaging. These will take the form of plastic stoppers or screw caps. They are considered cheap alternatives that points to the low grade of the contents. After a bottle of wine is opened a glass wine stopper is usually used instead of the cork. Glass stoppers provide ease in opening as well as an upscale image. When lined with plastic, they seal tight and reduce oxygen permeation.
