Sharpening a knife manually is easy to learn. But this should only be done after a professional sharpening. You simply need to maintain the edge using a ceramic knife sharpener. A good edge can be maintained sharp like this for up to one year.

Sharpen your knife on a ceramic stick that comes in two colors. The blue one is used for coarse sharpening while the white one is for smoothing and polishing. They work in the same way but the blue stick is more recommended for general use. These sticks come in lengths of 8 to 12 inches.
